Description
While the University of Alaska Fairbanks was founded in the early 1900s, its Tanana Valley campus was established in 1974 as part of the university's Rural and Community Development program. The campus currently offers over 40 degree programs and certificate courses for a wide variety of subjects, as well as non-credited training and development programs and seminars. The Tanana Valley Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks also offers a paralegal studies program that has the approval of the American Bar Association. This program teaches students how legal services operate throughout the United States and enable their getting hands-on experience while working under the supervision of an attorney. Students are able to build a foundation on which they may diversify into fields like political science or justice. This course covers aspects such as legal research, pleadings, legal writing, drafting contracts and wills, conducting witness and client interviews, basic investigation skills and fact-finding methods, trial preparation, discovery and the ethical responsibilities and functions of a paralegal. Students will also learn how to work as paralegals and legal assistants under the supervision of an attorney and handle the responsibilities handed out to them. Those looking for a career as a paralegal or legal assistant can find job opportunities in title agencies, banks, insurance companies, federal offices and private law firms. Most of the law offices located in Fairbanks have employed paralegals and legal assistants who have graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks paralegal studies program.
