Description

Marymount University was established in the year 1950 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary as Marymount College, a two year women’s college. It is a member of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has accredited it.

In 1973, Marymount became a four-year college, adding master's degree programs in 1979, and its first doctoral program, the Doctor of Physical Therapy, in 2004. In 1972, it admitted its first male students into the nursing program. The college became fully coeducational and moved to university standing in 1986.

Marymount has nearly 134 full-time teaching faculty members and 218 part-time faculty and about 85 percent of them hold the highest degree in their field. It has a student/faculty ratio of 13/1.

The Paralegal Studies programs offered by the institution are approved by the American Bar Association. It offers a Paralegal Studies Undergraduate Certificate. It comprises of 30 credits plus 24 hours of approved pro bono legal community service. The curriculum includes courses such as Introduction to the Legal System, Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, General Practice I & II, Legal Research and Writing, Real Estate Practices or Public Law and Procedure, Internship, Computerized Legal Research and optional programs that are recommended as Business Law I & II.

A graduate paralegal certificate is offered to graduate students who wish to get become certified paralegals. It comprises of 18 credits and 24 hours of approved pro bono legal community service. The curriculum includes Civil and Criminal Procedures, General Legal Procedures, Public Law and Administrative Procedures, Law, Computers, and the Internet, Supervising Legal Research and Writing, and Advanced Legal Research and Writing/Computerized Legal Research.

It also offers an M.A. degree in Legal administration as well as an MBA in legal administration. The faculty members are experts with years of experience in their respective fields of study and are well trained dedicated individuals. Financial aid such as federal and state grants, loans, scholarships, work-study etc. are offered.
