Description

Marshall Community & Technical College was founded way back in 1837 and gained the status of a University in 1961. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools has accredited it. It has more than 14,000 students, a faculty/student ratio of 1/19 and more than 83% of the faculty holds a PhD or the highest degree in their fields.

It offers 24 associate programs, 41 baccalaureate programs and 46 graduate programs. It offers an Associate in Applied Science Legal Assistant program that has been accredited by the accrediting agency for law schools and legal assistant/paralegal programs.

The program has been structured based on the guidelines of the ABA as well as the West Virginia State Bar by an advisory committee consisting of attorneys and legal assistants. Students may also earn a dual baccalaureate degree in Legal Studies from Marshall University’s College of Liberal Arts, Criminal Justice Department.

The students are trained to work under the supervision of attorneys. The program trains them to comprehend legal issues, aid the attorneys by conducting investigations and interviews, prepare legal documents, conduct extensive research as well as have the skill to analyze research material and apply them to real life situations.

The curriculum for the program includes courses in General Law I, General Law II, Legal Assisting, Business Organization & Governmental Regulations, Administrative Agency Advocacy, Legal Research and Writing I, Legal Research and Writing II, Computer Applications to the Law Office, Bankruptcy Law, Estate Planning and Probate Administration, Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Law of Domestic Relations, Medical Law, Employment Law, Legal Nurse Consulting, Special Topics and an Internship. Financial aid is available to deserving students including federal and state grants.
