Description
Johnson County Community College started its paralegal program in 1977 and was the first college in the Kansas City area to receive approval from the American Bar Association in 1980. The paralegal studies program offers a Paralegal Certificate and an Associate of Arts Degree. The paralegal program is a demanding program with emphasis laid on good communication and analytical skills. The paralegal program prepares students for an entry into the profession and also helps practicing paralegals to enhance their knowledge. The students are taught about the salient features of the legal system, functions of the court, procedures in civil and criminal law and how to critically analyze facts pertaining to cases. The program includes general education as well as legal specialty courses such as criminal litigation, torts, family law and bankruptcy. At Johnson County Community College it is necessary to complete 18 hours of legal specialty classes. At the end of the course, students need to complete an internship program where they work in a legal setting under the supervision of a practicing attorney. They need to complete at least 120 hours of internship. This hands-on experience prepares the students for their future career. Most paralegals get employment at private law firms but there are other areas where they make a mark as well. They can work in legal departments in insurance companies, real estate offices, banks and government organizations.
