Description
The College of the Sequoias is situated in the city of Visalia in California, USA. It is a community college located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The college was first opened as a junior college in 1926. Its main aim was to provide low cost higher education to local high school graduates. The College of the Sequoias offers two paralegal programs – a paralegal certificate and a paralegal major. The Paralegal Certificate has a requirement of 37 units. It consists of 23 units of core paralegal courses, 7 units of support courses and Professional Proficiencies. Students are also taught introductory computer skills, typing and English writing. The Associate Degree offered by the College of Sequoias has a requirement of 60 units. It consists of courses in general education, Professional Proficiencies, 30 units of paralegal core and support courses. Students need a minimum grade of ‘C’ to graduate. Those who wish to transfer to a four-year college after earning their Associates Degree should meet with a counselor to learn about transfer requirements at different universities. Both paralegal programs teach students modules such as civil procedure, legal ethics, interviewing, family law, probate procedures, research, legal writing, business law, criminal law, wills and evidence. Students are provided internships at the end of the course to get them familiar with the workings of a legal office.
