The college is one of the constituent colleges of the City University of New York. Bronx Community College offers students a two-year Associate of Applied Sciences degree in Paralegal Studies. The curriculum of this course has been created according to the guidelines given by the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Legal Assistants. It trains students in the fundamentals of law, imparts legal skills as well as provides practical work experience. The course is fully approved by the American Bar Association. The curriculum consists of business and law courses that include research, writing and other tasks commonly assigned by law firms to paralegals. It also includes a 210-hour internship. This paralegal course at Bronx Community College also has a Lay Advocate Option, which prepares students to serve the poor, elderly and the mentally and physically handicapped. A minimum of 60 credits are required for graduation. These credits may also be used towards a bachelor’s degree. Those who complete the course work as legal assistants under the supervision of a lawyer. Paralegals cannot give legal advice, appear in court or set fees. Private and public sector law firms, banks, accounting firms, insurance companies, brokerage houses, courts, hospitals and legal aid offices employ paralegal graduates.
